…THERE
IS SUCH A THING AS A BABY WHO CAN FALL ASLEEP ON THEIR OWN |
| |
|
| |
There
is a lot of pressure in today's society to have a 'Good Baby'.
|
| |
|
| |
First
let's start with some of the commonly held myths about what
constitutes a 'Good Baby'. |
| |
|
| |
Myth:
'Good Babies' are born that way…you either have one or you
don't! |
| |
Fact
1:
'Good Babies', that is, babies
who can self soothe and sleep for hours at a time, are a product
of routine, rhythm, age-appropriate activities and a conscious
effort on the part of the parent to put their baby in their
cot or bassinette awake. |
| |
Fact 2: 'Good
Babies' who are not placed in their cot awake do not stay
'good' for long! |
| |
|
| |
Myth:
If a baby is a 'good' sleeper, they will never wake up at
night. |
| |
Fact:Waking
at night, even when not feeding, is normal as baby cycles
through light and deep sleep. The problem is when a baby can't
get themself back to sleep without help. |
| |
|
| |
Myth:
'Good Babies' nap anywhere, anytime. |
| |
Fact:
All babies need rhythm and routine and if babies are sleeping
here, there and everywhere, this will eventually take its
toll. For a start they will grow accustomed to falling asleep
in the car and in the pusher and secondly, they will not feel
as secure as in their own bed. Irregular time and place of
sleep too often eventually leads to chaos. Further, a child
who is used to being in lots of different places early will
want the same thing when they get older…and as parents find
out, that's when it gets really complicated! |
| |
|
| |
Myth:
'Good Babies' always wake up happy. |
| |
Fact:Well-rested
babies wake up cheerful and alert. The problem is in the length
of time the baby has slept for, not in the character of the
child. |
| |
|
| |
Myth:
'Good Babies' take the bottle as well as breast. |
| |
Fact:
A baby who is purely breastfed can sleep just as many hours
as a baby who has supplement bottle feeds. It is the gap between
the breastfeeds which is important (needs to be AT LEAST
2.5 hours but ideally 3 to 4) so that the baby is getting
a full feed of the hind milk and the fore milk. |
| |
|
| |
Myth:
'Good Babies' are often larger in size. |
| |
Fact:
The babies size is not related to their ability to fall asleep
or stay asleep. |
| |
|
| |
Myth:
'Good Babies' are perfect and undemanding. |
| |
Fact:
There is no such thing as a perfect baby. Babies are just
like the rest of us who have legitimate emotional needs as
well as the more obvious physical needs. Just like us, some
days they need extra attention and cuddles and some days they
are a little more sensitive. |
