"The
baby was born and your life was changed more than you ever
dreamed…no one told you the change was irreversible."

There
are many reasons parenting is a challenge. Here are just a
few: |
| |
|
| |
1. Your
child's unique temperament
It has
happened to all of us at one time or another. Our child
does something for no particular reason that drives us crazy
and we wonder 'why?' 'what am I doing wrong?'. Often in
this scenario, the answer is nothing at all. You are simply
witnessing the natural unveiling of your child's individuality
and inherited nature, the building block of your child's
behavior for all later years. A child's individual temperament
can be extremely challenging especially if you are not aware
of what that temperament is or how to most effectively handle
it.

2. Trusting
yourself as a parent
Often,
we carry ineffective parenting habits from our parents or
have unresolved issues from our own childhood that come
back to haunt us. This can make it difficult to listen to
ourselves about what we think our child needs and it can
also make us feel like a failure. We end up having daily
clashes with what we think is best and the way we ourselves
have been brought up. It only makes it worse when people
start putting their two bobs in about our ineptness as parents...grandparents
can be particularly skilled at this!

3. It
takes a village to raise a child
Modern
Western culture teaches us that it is normal to care for
our babies without any help, locked up in our own little
houses, often feeling isolated. In other places in the world,
people think this is crazy and ask 'How can you raise a
child without the help of sisters, mothers, aunts, grandmothers,
friends and neighbours?' And it is no wonder. While we raise
our babies in virtual solitude, particularly if you are
a single mum, other people in the world have a plethora
of helpers to offer support, share the workload and join
in the fun.

4. Modern
life itself
Our
modern life is not set up to help us raise toddlers, in
fact it makes it more difficult! In a world which is increasingly
technical and consumer-oriented, stillness and peacefulness
are virtues which too few toddlers are entrenched with.
Instead, chaos often reigns, accompanied by rushing them
here and there and buying all the right gadgets. Activities
have become increasingly over-stimulating, replacing imaginative
play, real life experience and exploration with a much more
hurried existence for young ones.

5. Feelings
of frustration naturally arise
Toddlers'
behaviour can be extremely frustrating especially when nothing
you do seems to be working. Often, if we can focus on why
we are doing all this, why we are putting so much time and
energy into this little Being, it can make the frustrations
much easier to bear. You are raising a child to be the best
person they can be - of course that is going to bring with
it enormous challenges. If you remember the strong value
in your role as a parent, it makes all the frustrating moments
worthwhile.
